There is something very special about the start of a show term at HKPA.
Scripts begin appearing, music starts playing, casting is revealed and suddenly our studios are filled with that unmistakable buzz of excitement. Ideas that have been planned behind the scenes begin to come to life and our students start working towards something they will eventually share with an audience.
This term is an especially exciting one at Holly King Performing Arts Academy. Our Saturday schools are heading into full production mode, our Senior Performers are preparing to bring Come From Away to the stage, our Friday students are entering the wonderful world of the circus for their cabaret, The Show Must Go On, and even our youngest performers have an adventure ahead as they become superheroes and set out to save the universe!
There is certainly a lot happening at HKPA.
But while the finished performances are incredibly exciting, show term is about so much more than the final curtain call.
🌟 The Journey Is Just as Important as the Show
When an audience watches a finished production, they see the costumes, choreography, characters, songs and performances.
What they do not always see is everything that happened to get those young performers onto the stage.
They do not see the first rehearsal when everyone opens a new script. They do not see a student practising a tricky section until they finally master it. They do not see friendships forming between cast members, students helping each other remember choreography or the moment somebody finds the confidence to perform something they were previously nervous about.
That journey is where so much of the magic happens.
At HKPA, we want our students to enjoy performing, but we also want them to understand what it means to be part of a company and work together towards a shared goal.
🎠Learning Commitment and Responsibility
Being part of a production teaches young performers something incredibly valuable.
Other people are relying on you.
Students learn that attending rehearsals, practising material at home and arriving prepared all contribute to the success of the whole company.
If you have a scene with another performer, they need you to know your lines. If you are part of a dance, the rest of the group needs you to know your choreography. If you are singing in an ensemble, every voice contributes to the overall sound.
Gradually, students begin to understand that their individual contribution matters.
That sense of responsibility is a wonderful life skill and one that reaches far beyond performing arts.
💛 Building Confidence Through Performance
Confidence is not always about being the loudest person in the room.
Sometimes confidence is having the courage to audition.
Sometimes it is performing a line in front of your class for the first time.
Sometimes it is accepting a role you were not expecting and deciding to make it brilliant.
And sometimes it is standing backstage, feeling incredibly nervous, and choosing to step onto that stage anyway.
Show term gives students countless opportunities to build confidence in small ways every single week.
By the time performance day arrives, they can often look back and realise just how much they have grown.
🎬 Learning That Mistakes Are Part of Performing
Live theatre is wonderfully unpredictable.
A line might be forgotten. A prop might not be where somebody expected it to be. A costume might suddenly have a mind of its own!
Young performers learn how to stay calm, think quickly and carry on.
We want our students to understand that making a mistake does not mean everything has gone wrong. Often, the audience has absolutely no idea!
Learning to recover, adapt and continue with confidence develops resilience and independence, two skills that are incredibly valuable both on and off the stage.
🌟 Becoming Part of Something Bigger
Perhaps one of our favourite things about show term is watching a group of individual students gradually become a company.
Every performer has an important part to play.
There are leading roles, supporting roles, ensemble moments, dance numbers, group scenes and countless smaller moments that all come together to create the finished production.
Students learn to celebrate each other rather than simply focusing on themselves.
They cheer when somebody finally nails something they have been working on. They help each other backstage. They laugh together during rehearsals and share the excitement and nerves of performance day.
Those experiences create friendships and memories that can last far beyond the production itself.
🎤 The Magic of the Final Performance
And then, after weeks of rehearsals, it finally happens.
The audience arrives.
The lights go down.
The music begins.
There is something incredibly powerful about watching young people stand on stage and realise, we did this.
Every rehearsal, every correction, every line learnt, every dance practised and every moment of teamwork suddenly has a purpose.
Of course we love producing fantastic shows at HKPA, but some of our proudest moments happen when we look beyond the performance itself.
It is seeing the student who was once nervous standing confidently on stage.
It is seeing friendships that did not exist at the beginning of term.
It is seeing students take responsibility for their own preparation.
It is seeing them discover just how much they are capable of.
That is what show term is really about.
✨ An Exciting Term Ahead at HKPA
There is so much to look forward to over the coming months.
Our studios are going to be filled with music, scripts, choreography, creativity and probably quite a lot of laughter as our Autumn productions begin taking shape.
We cannot wait to take you behind the scenes throughout the term and share some of the incredible things our students are creating.
The scripts are out.
Casting is underway.
Rehearsals have begun.
Show term is officially here, and we cannot wait to see where it takes us. 💛
